Teen shot at sleepover when friend takes loaded shotgun off wall rack.

A 14-year-old Phoenix, Arizona boy was having a sleepover at a friend's house with two other boys. While his friend was in the kitchen helping his mother with dinner, the two other boys went into one of the bedrooms and closed the door. The room had a gun rack on the wall and one of the boys took a shotgun down. Thinking it was not loaded, he racked the slide and pulled the trigger.
The gun fired, striking the other boy in the leg, hitting a major artery. The boy was rushed to the hospital where he is in critical condition.
Police continue to investigate the incident.
Ohh shoot.

Leaving a loaded firearm out in the open when there are a bunch of teenage boys running about ranks as one of the Worst Ideas In the World, along with making your own brake discs out of cheese or letting Charles Manson babysit your kids.

This boy is a close friend of mine, we have gone to school together since 3rd grade. He is an amazing person and friend, and it was a complete accident. I know the other two boys, also. The comment above seems to me as being inadvertently rude, and the boys did not know it was loded. The boy's father is a big game hunter, which would explain the guns in the house. Please think before you post comments like that, you never know who might read them.
Thanks, a friend of those three boys.

Sure, the boys didn't know it was loaded. They're 14 year-old boys and boys that age are prone to doing things that are less than wise. That's why under no circumstances should a loaded shotgun have been left out unsecured in their presence. Being a big game hunter has got nothing to do with it. It's still a stupid mistake of ming-boggling magnitude. Don't get angry with the person who points that out; get angry with the person who let that situation happen.

The father probably does not have a safe, I know he family, and they are all very gun-safe ( if that makes sense) I am not pointing fingers, I am merely making an observation. Oh, and by the way, he is doing better, and is in a self-induced coma right now and going in for his first surgery today. Please keep him in your thoughts today, as he is still in pretty bad condition. Thanks, that friend again (:

I'm very glad your friend is doing better. Hopefully some day all this will just be a story he gets to tell his grandkids.

There's no excuse for not having a way to secure your firearms, short of not having firearms. Sure, an according-to-Hoyle safe is expensive, but a basic lockable gun cabinet is a fraction of the cost of one decent shotgun - and I have yet to buy a gun that didn't come with a locking device. Many states require it.

As for being "gun-safe", let me just point out that I'm a "safe driver", but I still wear my seatbelt, and appreciate cars with good crash test ratings. Good strategies for safety are based on the principle that multiple things have to go wrong before anything really bad can happen.

I see your point, and I am running out of things to say to keep this argument going. Seeing as I am a 14-year old, I am not as world-experienced, and so you may be right. Thank you for enlightening me on how most states have laws requiring gun safes... I think. Really, I only posted my comment to defend my friends, not to start up an argument. If you think about it, there really is no point arguing with a 14-year old, seeing as you probably have better things to do. Ha ha and I am glad to hear that there is at least one "safe driver" out there, they are definitely
becoming scarce. (:
